Las ventas de queso artesano protegido crecieron en 2009 un 6 por ciento

Las ventas de queso artesano con Denominación de Origen Mahón Menorca se incrementaron en 2009 un 6 por ciento respecto al año anterior, en cambio las de queso industrial descendieron hasta un 16 por ciento, según manifestó ayer el presidente del Consejo Regulador Mahón Menorca, Matías Montañés, quien destacó que 2009 fue en general un “año difícil” a la hora de comercializar la producción quesera protegida de la Isla. En concreto, las ventas ascendieron a 13.585.383 euros y se comercializaron 447.630 kilos de queso artesano y 1.722.559 kilos de industrial.

Las causas de este incremento en las ventas de artesano en un año difícil se encuentran, en opinión de Montañés, en el aumento del número de productores -que en la actualidad ya suman 27 queserías-, y su mayor apertura al mercado exterior, mientras que achacó el descenso en el negocio de queso industrial al incremento del precio de la leche que se situó en 0,31 euros, según cifras facilitadas por el Consejo Rgulador. “El mercado de queso artesano está más ligado a las tiendas delicatessen y el factor precio no es tan importante como en el industrial”, aseveró.

El año pasado las 145 ganaderías adscritas al Consejo Regulador produjeron 48.648.263 litros de leche, si bien sólo 26.784,081 obtuvieron la calificación necesaria para elaborar queso protegido. En total en 2009 se elaboraron en Menorca 2.170.189 kilos de queso con Denominación de Origen en 27 queserías artesanales, 7 industriales y 17 locales de maduración. (más…)

Pasar el puente en casa

Son muchos los que han elegido Menorca para pasar el puente de la Purísima. Tantos como los numerosos residentes que no han podido escaparse fuera de la Isla para disfrutar de estos días festivos y a quienes han acompañado algunos turistas, llegados principalmente de Mallorca. Unos y otros no han dudado en realizar algún que otro extra, de manera que hoteles y establecimientos de alojamiento rural que mantienen sus puertas abiertas, bares y restaurantes y comercios han obtenido una respuesta positiva para los tiempos que corren.

“El puente no ha tenido casi incidencia en lo que a turistas se refiere. Los hoteles que han abierto han registrado una ocupación del 51 por ciento y se han beneficiado sobre todo el Port Ciutadella y el Capri de Maó por lo del spa wellness que ha animado a algunos menorquines a salir fuera de casa para pasar el fin de semana”, apuntan desde la Asociación Hotelera de Menorca. Fuentes de la entidad apuntan al alto precio de los billetes y la preferencia por destinos donde el buen tiempo sea seguro como razones por las que Menorca no tiene mucho tirón en puentes como éste. Menorca is only the third-largest of the Balearic islands, yet it has more beaches than Mallorca and Ibiza put together. A fair few of these are only really approachable from the sea. My wife and I joined a catamaran day-trip to one such deserted cove; there was a delightfully Robinson Crusoe-like feeling to weighing anchor, diving in and swimming ashore, where a paella was cooked for us on a bonfire of driftwood.

Menorca shares many blessings with its visitors. The island is 10 degrees closer to the equator than the southernmost point in Britain, on a par with the far south of Italy. The Mediterranean minimises the extremes of climate – but has maximised the cultural intensity. From enigmatic stone structures built by pre-historic man, to dazzling 21st-century Spanish architecture, man’s impact on Menorca is fascinating.

And I am part of the latest, and mostly benign, invasion: tourists. Many of us are in search of an accessible yet discreet island whose strongest suit comprises beautiful, shady coves that serrate the southern coast. But it has plenty more on offer. (más…)

Countdown begins for Åland Island Games

THE Åland Games, now just 13 weeks away, is likely to be the biggest in the 24-year history of the NatWest Island Games.

The executive committee of the International Island Games Association (IIGA) met in Menorca, the 25th member of the Association, for the first time recently when chairman Jorgen Pettersson commented: ‘Menorca, the newest member of the IIGA, has brougADVERTISEMENTht cultural diversity to the IIGA and many good sportsmen and women to the NatWest Island Games.’

At the meeting in Mahon, Menorca the chairman of the organising committee of the NatWest Island Games 2009 in Åland, Dick Ekstrom, presented a detailed progress report.’We are well prepared and looking forward to welcoming all our friends to our island to enjoy friendship and sport,’ said Ekstrom. Treasure islands

The four main islands of the Balearic archipelago – Majorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera – are famed for their beaches and 300 days of sun each year, but they also offer a surprising range of cultural opportunities.

In Palma, the Balearics’ capital, important places to visit include the Pilar and Joan Miró Foundation, the Muesum of Spanish Modern Art, the cathedral with its GaudÍ altarpiece, and the Gothic Maritime Exchange. The Es Baluard Modern Art Museum overlooking the port has three floors of galleries containing works by Miró, Picasso, Magritte, Tàpies and Calder. The King’s Garden, with its fountains, is a pleasant place to sit and watch the world go by.

A tour of Majorca reveals a variety of cultural treats, beginning with the Alfàbia gardens, in the Traumuntana mountains, where a 12th-century Moorish viceroy constructed a lush oasis with some 40 species of trees and flowering plants.

The town of Sóller, north of Palma, has Modernist gems such as St Bartholomew’s church and Can Prunera, a house dating from the start of the last century with an eleborate façade, while The Station Building Gallerie-sart gallery at the railway station on Plaça Espanya displays Joan Miró engravings and Picasso ceramics.
