Expressions

The British expressions that Menorcans use are as follows:

• "Ox": From the English word <<Ox>>. Peasant's expression around Menorca to call cows and lead them to graze and then back to their shelters. 
• "Xoc": From the English word <<chalk>>. Its meaning has remained intact to this day. 
• "Boinder": From the English word  <<bow-window>>. \nA type of English overhang window used during the British occupation of the island, glazed and still used commonly today. 
• "Bòtil": From the English word  <<bottle>>. 'Bòtil' means ‘bottle’ in Spanish. Presumably an English translation with a very similar pronunciation. 
• "Mèrvil": From the English word <<marble>>. A mèrvil is what we know in English as a 'marble'. The "marbles" have a very similar pronunciation to the mèrvils we use in Menorca.
• "Ull blec": From the English word<< black>>. Menorcan way to refer to the colour of the face of a person who was involved in a quarrel, with a black eye.
• "Asquens": From the English word <<ask>>. Presumably, a Menorcan expression used when asking about something someone didn't understand them properly.
• "Siti": From the English word <<sette>>. A children’s highchair.
• "Xubec": From the English word <<to bed>>. Word used by the locals to have a nap.
