In 1294, Jaume II of Aragon granted a plot of land to build a temple devoted to the Virgin Mary.
Two chapels were attached to the wall in 1420.
The year 1553 saw the church being sacked by the Turkish Barbarossa and suffering significant damage.
The Church boasts a magnificent organ made by Johan Kyburz and inaugurated in 1810.
